Media and the football hooliganism- are they really related?
Soccer is an interesting game which has millions and millions of patrons all over the world. A single victory by their team can send the fans into a frenzy of celebrations and cheers, while a miserable defeat can trigger their anger and violence till no bounds.

Yes, this is yet another aspect of this interesting game; to which almost each and every soccer fan is aware of. Football hooliganism is something that almost every fan of the soccer game has been subjected to at some point of the time or the other. Football hooliganism is a term which has no specific explanation in the official dictionary. In fact, it was a term first coined by the media during the soccer tournaments in the mid-1960’s which witnessed frenzied and almost violent reactions from the fans which would gather at the stadium in order to cheer for their respective teams.
Football hooliganism can be of any kind, whether deliberate where the violence is sparked intentionally by the so-called fans in order to attract attention and in order to associate themselves with renowned fight clubs and violent groups. This kind of football hooliganism can even take place long before a match has taken place.
On the other hand, some fans may even resort to violent measures during a match, in case their team starts losing or some unfair practices are implemented in the game. The first ever incident of football hooliganism, which was reported by media, was in 1846, when the crowd gathered at the stadium of Derby had gone into utter chaos and disorder. The organizers ultimately had to resort to seek help from the cops and Special Forces in order to control the agitated crowd.
Yet another aspect to football hooliganism is the way it is covered by the media. Media plays an instrumental role, when it comes to reporting the happenings at the field to millions of Europeans who are sitting at their homes, glued to their TV sets in order to learn about the latest updates about the match. The media helps to construct a particular view about the incident at the stadium on the basis of their understanding. Needless to say, the so-called understanding of these viewers is founded only on the basis of what they see on the TV, in the exact manner in which the media may choose to report it.
The media may choose to report the violent incident exactly in the manner in which it occurred or magnify it and represent it as a situation of moral panic, thus presenting the things in a far worse scenario than they actually are. In many of the cases reported of football hooliganism, it has been reported that maximum number of violence is experienced in the soccer matches which take place outside United Kingdoms which have the English team participating in them. Contrary to the belief, Football hooliganism is majorly caused by local police or fans rather than the violent aggressors. To view a clip on the same, please visit the link.

Both the Media and Fans are responsible for such outrages. It wouldn’t be fair to squarely blame the Media for all the hooliganism.

when a team plays well and wins the media praise the team. but if there is trouble after the game the media soon go away from the result and focus on the trouble outside the ground, they take the limelight away from the players which deserve it! so i think if the media didnt focus on the violence people wouldnt take much intrest in it!
